Cruisin'

My graduation present was a cruise with my best friends and cousin from San Diego to Catalina Island to Ensenada, Mexico. It was a great time (the only negative was that we didn't actually get to go to Mexico; the State Dept issued a travel advisory just the day before we docked in Ensenada due to the swine flu...but with an extra day at sea and some of my very best friends aboard, we definitely made the most of our cruise experience.

After landing at the San Diego airport, we took a cab to the Embarcadero, checked our luggage on the Carnival Elation, and walked down to Seaport Village for some gyros and some sun. Unfortunately, we got a little too much sun...we all got fried, but fortunately, that was about the most sun we got for the week.

Before boarding the Elation

Before leaving the port, we had to have a safety drill. Here's my fancy-schmancy life jacket and nasty whistle on the deck, while I try to keep the intense wind from whipping the other one off to sea.

"Jack, I'm flying"

My cousin Brooke and I were roommates and pretty much attached at the hip. Best travel buddy, ever.

Pulling out of the harbor

Our ship as we left on a small boat to Catalina Island

Walkikng around Catalina with our sunclothes on.

The best part of Catalina (and of the whole cruise) might possibly have been our tandem bike ride. Brooke was better on the front, and she would ring the bell as we passed people and waved. When I took a turn on the front, my hat would either fly back and cover my face, making the visibility less than desirable, or fly back and block Brooke's face. However, there were disadvantages to being on the back as well--we smelled burning rubber for a few minutes before discovering that my skirt was caught in the back tire!

Catalina's little harbor was so colorful

Leaving Catalina

chilling on the deck.

We were a bit weirded out each time we'd come back to our room and find a new creature perched on one of our beds wearing one of our sunglasses--especially realizing we'd left our sunglasses buried somewhere in our purse in the corner of the room. I suppose it was a nice gesture.

We all helped each other get ready

All dressed up for formal night

The last night, with all the girls.
